SharePoint at the University of Rostock

The IT and Media Centre of the University of Rostock operates a university-wide service based on SharePoint Server 2019.
The related server is available https://teamserver.uni-rostock.de.
SharePoint is particularly suitable for collecting "dispersed" knowledge of workteams at one place.
SharePoint is a web application which offers the following basic functions:

  • Libraries for documents, image files and forms
  • Wikis – a la Wikipedia, Blogs – web-based diaries
  • Lists (e.g. announcements, hyperlinks, self-defined lists)
  • Calendars, contacts, tasks
  • Discussion rounds, problem trackings, surveys

If required, the ITMC establishs SharePoint websites for workteams and transfers it to a staff member in charge for further use. Here, the responsible administrator has the opportunity to give ITMC access rights to data of his/her SharePoint website to any user of the central user administration. Thus, workgroups can jointly establish knowledge very fast and share it globally.
The approach to collect knowledge „online“ needs a radical modification of the working mode, away from paper and file management towards contemporary approaches which consequently use the opportunities of the web 2.0 or „participatory web“. SharePoint is an ideal precondition to enable this change.
