Why isn't the Element X app from the App Store working?

The Element X app only uses a handful of authentication mechanisms. The authentication method you are using is not currently supported by Element X.
We recommend using the Element Classic app.

Why can't I read the messages?

There may be several reasons for this.

  • Is the backup key set up correctly?
  • Is your device verified? Please check this to regain access through verification.
  • Does the recovery key contain a space? Please remove any space at the end.
  • Despite having a backup key, are there messages that cannot be decrypted?

If you were completely logged out of the chat service and someone left you a message in the chat during this time, the message cannot be decrypted.

This is a security feature provided by the software manufacturer. The only solution offered so far is to have at least one logged-in session permanently active. Then the messages can also be read on other devices where you upload the security key.

Why are my chats not showing up in the mobile app?

After setting up the mobile app for chat, existing chats are sometimes not displayed.
You can trigger synchronization by asking a chat contact to send you a message. After that, all other chats should also be synchronized on your smartphone.

Why do I have the “Important Service Information” room?

Every user will be added to this room after their initial login to the chat server.
In this room, you will receive important information about the service and notifications about updates and maintenance work.
Please remain in this room to stay informed.
Messages sent to the support account will not be answered via chat. If you have any questions, please contact chat support by email.

Will call/video call support be offered in the future?

According to current plans, the call and video call function will not be supported.
Please use the alternative solutions provided by the university, e.g., Zoom or BBB.

How do I create unencrypted groups?

Especially for large groups, it is recommended to create unencrypted chat rooms, as verifying individual participants can be very time-consuming.
This can only be disabled when creating the group; it is not possible to disable encryption in a group after it has been created. To do so, the group would have to be recreated without encryption.
To do this, deactivate the “Enable end-to-end encryption” option when creating the group.

How do I turn off system notifications, such as new/leaving members and profile changes?

Unfortunately, system notifications cannot be disabled on the server side. However, it is possible to disable notifications about additions and removals, as well as profile changes in groups and chats, for each profile.
These messages can make the chat confusing. We therefore recommend disabling these messages.
To do this, go to the settings under your profile and select “Preferences.”
There, you can disable the following options in the timeline section:

  • Joining/leaving messages (invitation/removal/ban not affected)
  • Display name changes
  • Profile picture changes

You can find more information on this in the user manual.

I want to chat with a project partner from another university, but I can't connect.

The Matrix chat server at the University of Rostock uses a whitelist for Matrix servers that can be contacted.
Please check whether the desired Matrix server from another university is already listed on the Federation website.
If not, please contact chat support so that the desired server can be added.
